چکیده

Abstract The woodpecker family (Picidae) includes numerous species that vary in size and plumage colouration, but which share many easily recognisable external features. These birds possess pronounced anatomical adaptions enable them to exploit arboreal habitats live niches are inaccessible most other birds. aim of this study was increase our knowledge on the relationships between skull shape, habitat preference, pecking abilities foraging habits 10 European species. A geometric morphometric approach used analyse two-dimensional cranial landmarks. We principal component (PC) analyses those measurements may be related preference habits. PCs resulted descriptions relative length width bill, variation its size, orientation nostrils elongation neurocranium, position palatine bone, rostrum , thickness mandible bone. analysis showed confirmed presence some elements strongly associated with behaviour excavation abilities.

New molecular evidence supports the species status of Kaempfer’s Woodpecker (Aves, Picidae)

Kaempfer's Woodpecker (Celeus obrieni) is the only species of the genus Celeus endemic to Brazil. The description of this taxon as a subspecies of the Rufous-headed Woodpecker (Celeus spectabilis) was based on a single specimen. While C. obrieni and C. spectabilis are now considered separate species based on morphological and limited molecular evidence, no study has critically tested the recipr...

Cranial Osteology of Meiglyptini (Aves: Piciformes: Picidae)

THE MEIGLYPTINI COMPRISE EIGHT SPECIES GROUPED INTO THREE GENERA: Meiglyptes and Mulleripicus, with three species each, and Hemicircus, with two species. The aim of the present study was to describe the cranial osteology of six species and three genera of Meiglyptini and to compare them to each other, as well as with other species of woodpeckers and other bird groups. The cranial osteology vari...

Patterns of diversity in cranial shape among plant-visiting bats

The independent origins of associations between morphology and ecology are often viewed as evidence of adaptation (e.g., Larson and Losos, 1996). There are many examples of morphological and ecological convergence among bats that are linked to diet. One of the most widely cited instances of trophic convergence is the independent evolution of plant-visiting in the families Pteropodidae (Old Worl...

Identification of European woodpecker species in audio recordings from their drumming rolls

Article history: Received 10 May 2016 Received in revised form 23 August 2016 Accepted 28 August 2016 Available online 30 August 2016 Drumming sounds are substantial clues when searching audio recordings for the presence of woodpeckers. Woodpeckers use drumming for territory defence and mate attraction to such an extent that some species have no vocalisations for these functions. This implies t...
